Snorkeling Experience

On June 22nd, I went to snorkeling in Sorrento. Prior to this, I have never snorkeled before and I had an amazing experience! It began with a 30 min boat ride to our first destination, Isolotto di Vetara, a designated no-boat preserve.

At our first stop, my tour guide took our group into two separate, open caves where we saw lots of fish! It was amazing to feel the weightlessness of the water. Because the Mediterranean Sea is so salty, it takes very minimal effort to stay afloat. In one of the caves, there was a beautiful blue color coming through because of a small light from above, illuminating the cave and the fish within. I will forever have that image in my heart, as it truly was breathtaking.

At our second stop, Grotta di Mitigliano, we were able to see more of the nature of the sea with different sea grasses, small corals, and numerous types of plant life. Unfortunately, this stop made me seasick!! After a quick vomit, I was back at it looking at the many sights underwater.

I was most especially impressed just seeing the depth of the water and how I looked so small in comparison to everything around me. The peacefulness of the soft crackling sound of the water and light beams shining through brought me much serenity.

I will put below Google pictures of some of the fish I saw and can remember! I also saw sea urchins (I held one), black sponges, a red starfish, a little perfectly round jellyfish, sardines, a lizardfish, goby fish, lots of plankton, some bioluminescent large plankton/ sea creatures, and a few other fish that I can’t remember the names of!
